United Nations Mission (BINUH) said that the security situation in Haiti is extremely critical, violence is flaring up again, and ordinary people are suffering due to the activity of criminal groups.

Large-scale violence is now spreading outside the capital Port-au-Prince, putting a strain on the national security system.

Referring to the dire humanitarian situation, he expressed anger that 115 civilians were killed and many others were injured in an attack on October 3 in the Arbonite area. After this attack thousands of people have been forced to be displaced from their homes.

Special Representative Maria Isabel Salvador told representatives of member states that criminal groups are now also carrying out attacks by sea.

He said that the UN Mission has prepared a comprehensive strategy to support the political process led by Haitian citizens. Under this, emphasis has been laid on inclusive dialogue, fresh elections, constitutional reforms and better national security.

The Special Representative cautioned that at present there is a lack of unity in the political leadership and political tensions are being fueled at the top level.

Against this backdrop, the UN mission is striving to promote cooperation between various factions in order to pave the way for necessary reforms and elections in the country.

United Nations Children’s Fund ,Unicef)’s head, Catherine Russell, said in her address that the crisis in Haiti has deeply affected the local population, with children out of schools and at risk of recruitment by armed groups.

He said that it is extremely challenging to deliver humanitarian aid to those in need, and children are somehow surviving on their own.

Despite the ongoing difficulties, this year, UN agencies and partner organizations have provided food, health care and other critical assistance to millions of people.

The UNICEF chief urged the Security Council to help Haiti by stopping the activities of armed groups, providing funding for humanitarian assistance and ensuring protection and support for humanitarian aid workers.
